Can I get an insurance quote for my cottage, chalet or other seasonal home?

If you're not looking to insure your primary residence, getting insurance for your cottage or seasonal home can be challenging. Many companies are unwilling to cover your cottage or seasonal home on a standalone basis, however, most will provide coverage as an extension of your primary home insurance package. In this case, it's generally listed on your primary home insurance policy as a "Secondary" or "Seasonal" property
Part of the reason is because a cottage or seasonal home is often unoccupied, leaving these properties more prone to theft and vandalism. As well, they are frequently located far from fire halls, and if there was a fire, the property is more likely to be involved in a total loss.

Do you operate a home-based
business from your property?

A basic home insurance policy may provide enough coverage for your home-based business. However, you may want to purchase additional coverage especially if your business:
has customers visiting your home regularly
•uses specialized or costly equipment
•has product inventories has signs at the location advertising a business
•uses hazardous materials or processes
•has employees working from your home

Some of this additional coverage may be available through a rider that is simply added to your home insurance policy. There are times however, when you might be better off purchasing a commercial policy.

What is the construction type
of your property?

Insurance companies use the construction type of your property to determine your rates. Generally, if your home is of a more solid construction like brick or brick veneer, the lower your insurance rates. This is because these materials are less combustible than other building materials

****NOTE: Getting accurate quotes
What is the replacement value
of your residence?

The replacement value of your home is the price to rebuild your house (with materials of like kind and quality) after a serious loss, like fire. It is not the amount you would get if you sold your house and, it does not include the value of the land where your house is located.
An average replacement value for most urban Canadian centres is about $130 per square foot. When you speak to your agent or broker, they will make sure your actual policy reflects your home's true replacement value based on tools and statistics they have available

What is the primary method
of heating in your property?

Insurance companies consider the method you use to heat your property to determine your rates. Some forms of heating are safer than others

What additional heating do you use
to heat your property?

Insurance companies will consider the use of any additional heating methods in the home when determining your rates. Generally, if you use any additional methods, your risk of fire and accidents are higher, therefore,
your rates may be higher.
